How to make an attendance sheet
The maker follows the four steps a usable register needs:
- Name the class and pick the month. Enter the school name and the class, then choose the month and year. The tool reads how many days that month has and builds the right number of columns.
- Paste your student list. Paste one student name per line. You can copy the list straight from a spreadsheet. Numbering is added automatically.
- Choose your options. Decide whether to shade Sundays and whether to include a totals column for the days each student was present. Holidays can be crossed out by hand after printing.
- Print or save as PDF. Click generate. The register opens in a clean print view sized for the month, so you can print it for the classroom wall or save it as a PDF.
When paper is enough, and when it is not
A printed register works well for one class or a short-term need, and a wall copy is easy for a teacher to mark each morning. Across a whole school, paper starts to cost time: totals have to be added by hand, a parent cannot see the record, and a pattern of absence is easy to miss until it is serious. Digital attendance marks the same register on a phone or tablet, totals it automatically, and can message a parent on the day a child is absent. The honest trade-off is in our guide to digital attendance for schools.
From a printed sheet to a live register
If marking attendance on paper has become a chore, a digital register is usually the first thing a school moves online, because the daily habit is simple and the payoff is immediate. It feeds the same totals into reports and parent updates without anyone retyping them. Our school digitization playbook puts attendance first for that reason, and Bexra's attendance feature shows it in practice.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make a monthly attendance sheet?
List your students down the left, put one column for each day of the month across the top, and leave a blank cell to mark present or absent. Add a totals column on the right. This free maker builds exactly that from your class name, the month, and a pasted student list, then prints it or saves it as a PDF.
Does it know how many days are in the month?
Yes. When you pick a month and year, the tool works out the correct number of days, including February in a leap year, and labels each column with the date and the weekday letter. It can shade Sundays so the register matches a normal school week.
Can I print it for the classroom?
Yes. The sheet opens in a clean print view that fits a month across the page, so it prints well on A4 in landscape for the register or the classroom wall. You can also save it as a PDF from the print dialog.
Is my student list uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. The names you paste are never sent to a server or stored, and the sheet is built on your own device. Close the tab and nothing remains.
Is a paper register the best way to track attendance?
A printed register is fine for a single class or a quick need. Across a whole school it gets hard to total, share with parents, or spot a pattern of absence early. Digital attendance marks the register on a phone or tablet, totals it automatically, and can alert a parent the same day. Our guide on digital attendance explains the trade-off.
